KinGo’s is truly a family operation. Owners Youmna and Hilmi Hishmeh, a warm and passionate mom and son team, own and operate this fine Fairview establishment. Youmna is most commonly seen at the restaurant warmly greeting customers and preparing homemade ingredients for their meals, while Hilmi helps out mostly on evenings and weekends since he also works a full-time job in the telecom industry. Daughter Razan often lends a hand at the business in a supportive role.
Originally from the Middle East, the Hishmeh family immigrated to Canada in 2001 and have lived in south Calgary ever since. They had previous experience running a cafe business overseas and have brought that education into the operation of KinGo’s. Youmna is particularly passionate about food and catering and was the driving force behind KinGo’s. She is adamant that their food be fresh, homemade and of great quality. Many of the ingredients are made in-house such as the pickled turnip, pickled cabbage and sauces.
Youmna has personally developed the menu and the recipes which are based heavily on Mediterranean tradition with her own touches to create a unique fare. The menu includes many of the traditional standards such as chicken shawarma, beef donair (or a combination of the two), falafel, a variety of pizza offerings (including a gluten-free option), pita pies or pockets and various side dishes such as hummus, fattoush and grape leaves and desserts like baklava. However, they will also accommodate custom and special orders to the best of their ability and they specialize in catering orders for your family events, business meetings and the like.
The Hishmeh’s love to get behind holidays and special events – they make turkey Shawarma at Thanksgiving, log Christmas cake and Christmas cookies in December, heart pizzas for Valentine’s Day and their original donair poutine during Poutine Week in Calgary to name a few.
They will also make any cake through special order and a partnering business (with the aforementioned Cakeland). The cakes are light, delicious, not heavy on the sugar, and can be custom made for any occasion (e.g. mango cake, nutella cake, fruit cake or the standard chocolate or vanilla)
While all of their food is delicious, the Hishmeh’s put a special emphasis on their pizza – their secret is that the pizza is thick with real, fresh ingredients and they don’t skimp on the toppings!(The authors can enthusiastically rave on both the high quality and generous quantity of the meals at Kingo’s having tried a wide variety of their offerings).
The owners are passionate about the business and their connection to the community. They love the freedom of being their own boss and accomplishing things for themselves as well as the family connection within the business. They are also thrilled to see customers come back to KinGo’s over and over providing a lot of positive feedback. They want to make a personal connection to the community and be seen as adding to the flavour of Fairview, making available a home outside your home and providing residents with hearty, great quality food.
